How to Open HEIC Files on Windows 10 and 11 — No Install Required

iPhone photos arrive as HEIC files that Windows cannot open by default. This guide shows you three methods — including one that requires no software install at all.

Quick Answer: You can open HEIC files on Windows instantly at ViewAnyFile.app — drag your photo, it opens in seconds. No codec install, no software, no upload.

HEIC is Apple's default camera format on iPhone and iPad since iOS 11. It produces photos that are half the size of JPEG with better quality — but Windows cannot open them without extra software.

Method 1: Open HEIC Online (No Install)

The fastest solution. Visit ViewAnyFile.app and drag your HEIC file into the browser. It decodes the image using WebAssembly entirely on your device — no upload, no account, no wait.

  1. Go to ViewAnyFile.app in Chrome, Edge, or Firefox
  2. Drag your .heic file onto the page
  3. The photo opens instantly in full resolution
  4. Click Download to save as JPEG, PNG, or WebP

This method works on Windows 10, Windows 11, Mac, Linux, and Android — any browser.

Method 2: Install the Microsoft HEIC Codec (Windows Only)

Microsoft offers a free HEIF Image Extensions codec in the Microsoft Store. After installing it, Windows Photos and File Explorer can open HEIC files natively. The downside: it only works on Windows and requires a Store account.

Method 3: CopyTrans HEIC (Free Plugin)

CopyTrans HEIC is a free plugin that adds HEIC support to Windows. It integrates into File Explorer and lets you right-click to convert HEIC to JPEG. Requires installation and registration.

Why HEIC Files Exist

Apple adopted HEIC in 2017 to reduce iCloud storage costs. A typical HEIC photo is 2-4 MB versus 6-12 MB as JPEG, at equal or better visual quality. The trade-off is compatibility — Windows, Android, and most web platforms expect JPEG.
